Sweet Lorraine is a 21st Series Custom Super Clipper Eight Long Wheel Base Sedan. Packard did not change models as often as other manufacturers. Rather than introducing new models annually, Packard began using its own "Series" formula for differentiating its model changeovers. Still, many Packard owners use the manufacture date to identify their vehicles in addition to the series. Lorraine is one of about one thousand of these vehicles that were manufactured with only around fifty of these beautiful vehicles left.
The 21st series Clippers were designed prior to World War two by the famed auto designer Dutch Darren. Because they were designed and produced prior to World War 2 and then resumed production with the same vehicle after the war they qualify as a CLASSIC as determined by the Classic Car Club of America. They are one of the last cars to qualify and because of their modern design they are considered one of the most useable of the classics.
In 1946, the Packard 356 straight eight was a top performer with tons of torque and was as quiet as a sewing machine. The '46 Packard set the standard for form and function in the automotive world with integrated front fenders that flowed into the doors, a notch back roof that continued into the rear end, a sloped wind screen and hidden running boards. Packard also employed what they called, Safe-T-Flex suspension, ensuring a comfortable ride on any road. It further featured a fifth shock absorber that minimized side-to-side oscillations, enhancing the overall driving experience. It is said to be the first production car that was wider than it was tall.
One look at a Series 21 Packard will tell you that it inspired the design of the 1950 and 1960's Rolls Royce.
Our Packard came to us from the collection of a very well known West Coast Collector. She was restored in a very proper manner.
